SUMMARY OF POSITION
California FBLA is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) student organization committed to preparing today's students for success in business leadership. The State Officers’ Adviser generally assists in developing and overseeing the California FBLA State Officers, coordinates their activities, and assists in planning and executing the State and Section Officers’ Leadership Summit, and helps officers prepare and execute their roles at the State Leadership Conference.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Help develop and oversee the newly-elected State Officers with goal setting and program of work for the upcoming year at the May meeting (updating Business Achievement Awards Chapter recognition guidelines, State Projects, membership, etc.), and assist the State President in the preparation of the State Officers’ meeting agendas.
- Serve as the liaison and maintain communication among the State Officers, their advisers, and their section directors pertaining to all aspects of their duties and responsibilities (e.g., send reminders of due dates of upcoming meetings and activities, and receive by the fifth of each month the Monthly Officer Reports from each of the State Officers and respond to their reports).
- Plan, organize, coordinate, and execute the State and Section Officers’ Leadership Summit in July with the assistance of advisers and others involved in California FBLA.
- Communicate with the Board Chair, Section Directors, Business Manager, Business Development Manager, Program Coordinator, and Board as necessary and periodically, including to post updated projects and programs on
www.cafbla.orgwebsite.
- Assist in aspects of organization and execution of State Leadership Conference:
- Verify all State Chapter, Internship, and individual projects prior to the State Leadership Conference, compile list of honorees, print certificates, and prepare certificates for General Session and Section Meetings.
- At the State Leadership Conference, meet with all State Officer candidates, their campaign managers, and advisers; go over election procedures; approve all campaign materials; oversee the caucus; and the voting delegate session.
- Facilitate the selection (paper screening) of the L. Byram Bates Memorial Scholarship winners.
- Finalize the script for the Opening General Session and the Awards of Excellent in collaboration with the Conference Chair, the multimedia personnel, and oversee the State Officers’ practice.
- Order State Officer plaques and attend Outgoing State Officers’ breakfast.
- Assist State Officers in preparation for national conference:
- Assist the State President and all other State Officers in the preparation of the State Chapter Annual Business Report for submission to nationals in a timely manner.
- Oversee (a) the design, ordering, and distribution/sales of the California FBLA pins for nationals; and (b) the ordering and shipping of California FBLA spirit items for nationals.
- Assist in facilitating the Leadership Development Institute for North and South.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Credentialed business education teacher or credentialed teacher
·
Prior experience as FBLA local or section adviser, former FBLA section or state officer, or former FBLA member with excellent leadership skills
·
Proven excellent interpersonal skills
·
Strong written and oral communication skills
·
Appreciation of volunteerism, business, and education
·
Enthusiasm and passion for developing future business leaders
·
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment
·
Computer technology skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
·
Strong organization skills, time management, and attention to detail
LOCATION
The individual selected for this volunteer position will need to be able to perform duties primarily out of his/her home, and be available to travel, within the state of California, to (a) meetings of State Officers required for the State Leadership Summit in July, (b) State Officers’ meetings in September or October, March, and May, (c) the State Leadership Conference in April or May.
STIPEND
The volunteer State Officers’ Adviser position is unpaid and benefits are not offered.
However, the Board determines each year whether to grant a small stipend for the year, and, if so, the amount of the stipend (the most recent yearly stipend was $3,500).
