American enterprise celebrated through BIZ U

To celebrate American Enterprise Day, Oran High School FBLA members in Missouri learned about free enterprise and shared their knowledge with Oran Elementary School students in a Saturday project called BIZ U. BIZ U was a program designed to allow third through sixth graders the opportunity to experience running a business.

The event began with leadership and teambuilding activities. Then, participants completed a quiz on leadership qualities for entrepreneurs. After dividing into groups, FBLA members worked with students to help them visit various locations set up on campus for the simulation ranging from a bank to a supply store to a production room. Students also visited the computer lab where they filmed and edited commercials starring themselves. They developed products, applied for loans, completed budgets, and then prepared advertising to market their products. The event concluded with presentations from each group about their products, including showing billboards and television commercials they created during the day.

All participants indicated on their evaluation that they enjoyed the activity and would recommend it to others. Each received a BIZ U T-shirt and certificate of completion. Sixteen FBLA members participated in the project.
