Braves in Battle

The Indian River High School “Braves” just completed their community service project—“Braves in Battle.” The project was two fold. The first part of the project involved sending care packages to soldiers who are defending our nation in the war. The members raised funds to put together 30 care packages to be mailed to the Middle East. Soldiers in various service branches, troops, and locations were selected to receive the packages. Each box contained food, puzzles, letters and notes written by Indian River students, stationery, playing cards, and a copy of Tomorrow’s Business Leader.

The second part of the project involved people closer to home. The members constructed two boards to honor soldiers who have touched the lives of the students and staff at Indian River. The “Alumni” board displays the names of former “Braves” who are currently serving in the “War on Terror.” The second board for “Loved Ones,” recognizes the friends and family members of students and staff who are fighting in the Middle East. Names and current locations were written on blue stars for alumni and red starts for loved ones. The alumni stars also include the graduation years of these brave soldiers. The boards are displayed in the commons area of our school under a “Braves in Battle” banner. Names are continuing to be added as they are submitted.

This project has generated excitement and patriotism in our students. It has been a great way to show our appreciation and gratitude for those who are risking their lives every day to keep America safe!
